my lenten fast

Today's blessing:
New perspectives

For Lent this year, I will be fasting from anxiety, anger, and resentment.

How's that for a challenge? This is all a part of my attempt to choose contentment, and I would like to thank PK for the inspiration for this one.

Growing up, Lent was all about self-denial for me. I gave up chocolate or candy or meat (my mom was thrilled about that one). Yes, it was a good exercise in discipline and learning how to do without something I enjoyed, but what was the long term benefit for myself or those around me? I'm sure I could come up with something if I really dig at it, but why?

This year, I will be fasting from anxiety, anger, and resentment.

I will choose contentment, and, hopefully, it will rub off on those around me.

What are you doing for Lent? If you don't celebrate Lent (yes, it is a celebration) then how do you challenge yourself?

life is good

Today's blessing:

Things are generally going really well for me right now. Work is good, the baby is perfect, my hubby is amazing, and the next big adventure is just around the corner. Next big adventure, you ask? In August or September, hubby will be starting a year long internship, location TBD. Yes, life is good.

I think contentment is one of the best things a person can feel. According to my dictionary.com app, content means "satisfied with what one is or has; not wanting more or anything else." There's a sense of calmess and peace about it that you don't necessarily get with elation or joy. Joy is pretty great, too, don't get me wrong! However joy, which is defined as "the emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying" must be brought on by an external source. Contentment is brought on by you. You're not reliant on anything else. I remember the phrase "Choose Joy" being a thing a few years ago. There might have even been a book or something. If you look at the actual dictionary definition, this phrase is a bit misleading. Joy is not something you choose, it is something that you feel as a result of something that happens to you. You can, however, choose contentment. Choose to not "need" more. Choose to be satisfied. Choose contentment, and be peaceful.

Yes, life is good.

thankful day thirty five

Today's blessing:

I can't believe my baby is one year old. Seriously. I'm still pretty much in shock. It was a beautiful day filled with so many blessings. I will have to share some of them at a later date, because I am far too exhausted right now to attempt to form any more coherent sentences.

On that note...I was apparently so out of it that I never actually published this post that I wrote yesterday. Whoops!

thankful day thirty four

Today's blessing:
Letting go of perfectionism.

Tomorrow is my baby girl's first birthday. Of course, I want it to be the perfect day, and I want to throw her the perfect party. Because she'll remember it and resent me forever if I don't.

However...I'm going to make excuses. I fully realize that there are people who do a whole lot more than I do and who are much busier than I am. But that doesn't make me any less busy. It's hard to work full time (though what a blessing that I've been able to pick up the extra shifts the last couple weeks!) and come home to a baby, often with a husband who doesn't get home until after 7:30, depending on what time his basketball practice ends. (He coaches 10th grade girls. Crazy? Probably.) It's hard to be productive when you have a very energetic baby to tend to. Add to that the fact that her "bedroom" is in our big main room, so things like doing dishes and vacuuming don't work so well after she goes to bed, and, well...the result is a less than pristine home.

But I don't have to have a perfectly clean home in order to host a fun gathering. I don't have to have seven different vegetable options and three flavors of potato chips. And I don't have to have a cake shaped like a monkey face in order for P to enjoy it. Though it would be cute, wouldn't it?

This little girl is raising a mommy who is not afraid to invite people into her imperfect, though always loving home. And that is a wonderful thing!

thankful day thirty three

Today's blessing:
Homemade macaroni and cheese.

This is my favorite comfort food of all time. I have been on a quest since I started doing my own cooking for the perfect mac and cheese recipe, and I have yet to find it. I can't even tell you how many I've tried and altered and just made up from scratch. Tonight's attempt was one of the more disappointing ones. However, it was still homemade mac and cheese, which achieves a certain level of deliciousness by default.

Do you have a delicious mac and cheese recipe? I'd sure love to try it!

thankful day thirty two

Today's blessing:
My puppy.

I guess she's not exactly a puppy anymore - she's five years old. I can't quite believe I never had a dog before her. What did I do before she came to greet me every time I came home from work? When I was pregnant (before I knew I was pregnant) and I didn't feel well, I would lay on the couch and she would snuggle right up to my stomach. Her warmth always made me feel better.

She doesn't like it when we leave. Whenever we get out the suitcases to go somewhere, she either lays inside the suitcase or sits on our clothes so we can't pack.

She's such a snuggler. Husband and I agreed when we got her (mostly because I put my foot down) that she would not come in bed with us. At that time, he left for work at a ridiculous hour. After he left for work, guess who started to become my snuggle buddy. I just couldn't resist. She'll crawl under the covers and just snuggle right up to you. Someone shared this image with me shortly before the baby was born:

Let me just say...we were well prepared for this, because a little white dog has been sleeping in those positions on our bed for nearly five years now.

I could go on about why my puppy is awesome, but it's getting late and I have a puppy to snuggle with before bed.

What's the best thing that your pet brings to your life?

thankful day thirty one

Today's blessing:
The conversation my husband had with the baby on the way home from Target this evening. It went something like this:

My husband looks back at P and sees this:
Husband: What happened to your slippers?
Baby: Hahahaha!
Husband: You are a silly baby; your feet are going to get cold!
Baby laughs again.
Husband: Ok, you win, P!
Baby: Yay!

thankful day thirty

Today's blessing:
Good chapstick.

Living in the midwest in the winter, I can certainly appreciate the value of a good tube of chapstick. (I should probably say "lip balm," since I don't actually use ChapStick, but it's just one of those things - like Kleenex. If I don't capitalize it does that make it okay? I'll go with yes.) It's always a sad day when I inadvertently send a tube through with the laundry. I'll usually still use it. Is that gross? There are worse things!

While I have settled on my favorite brand of chapstick, I'm still looking for a good lotion...something that balances price with quality. Any suggestions? What else do you do to take care of yourself during the cold dry winter months?

thankful day twenty nine

Today's blessing:
Baby's face when she eats chili.
How cute is she with her little chili mask? And how about those wrist rolls? She's an odd child, though. She eats the beans and tomato chunks, but she throws the meat on the floor. Her puppy loves it, that's for sure! It's days like this when I fully appreciate the power of Oxy-Clean.

thankful day twenty eight

Today's blessing:
A good set of windshield wipers and a full tank of washer fluid.

It's the kind of thing you don't really appreciate until you're driving through Milwaukee and something is frozen over the little hole where the washer fluid is supposed to come out. I'm a firm believer in "you get what you pay for." Some things (toilet paper, toothpaste, and windshield wipers) are worth spending a little more money on!

What are your splurges?

thankful day twenty seven

Today's blessing:
Having a good driver behind the wheel in bad weather.

I'm on my way to southeastern Wisconsin for a Pampered Chef training, and let's just say that the weather is less than awesome. It's pretty much been snowing since we left the Twin Cities. Luckily for me, I'm riding with some fun people who also happen to be stellar drivers!

Added bonus: they are all parents who understand that babies cry sometimes.
